Malene Hartmann Rasmussen
Artist in Residence - Detroit
2020
Residency Supported by The Danish Arts Council.
About:
In 2020 I was selected to be part of The Danish Arts Foundation's programme for promoting Danish art and design in USA. I spend spring 2020 in Detroit making a new body of work inspired by the Alaskan Inuit and Native North American art from Detroit Institute of Art. The Iroquois people of Alaska made some of the strangest carved wooden masks with twisted grinning mouths and crooked noses. They belonged to the False Face Society, these masks were sacred tools used in rituals to derive evil spirits. Some Inuit masks depicted animal spirits, some with birds-heads or wings attached or larger animals holding smaller animals in their mouths. The animals were totems to help the shaman travel between worlds during ceremonies.
I started making animal masks, some of them with other animals living inside their mouths as to either protect or consume them.
Browsing on instagram, pictures of puppies keep popping up and it made me miss my dog Django, he is a never ending inspiration in my practice. So small dog puppies appeared sleeping quietly and seemingly free of worries in the monsters mouths.
